What is Baccarat?

Have you ever watched James Bond and wondered what game is he playing at a Casino table with a crowd surrounding him? It’s Baccarat. With its roots in European history, it’s a game based solely on chance and, although it may appear complex, is actually one of the easiest casino games to understand.

Where did Baccarat originate?

Baccarat can be traced back further than the Middle Ages, however it was during this historic period that the game was revived through the use of tarot cards. A game classed as a firm favourite amongst European nobility, the contemporary version known as Mini-Baccarat has been adapted slightly to simplify its rules, and has had its splendour and grandeur lessened somewhat due to its overwhelming popularity with American players.

What is online Baccarat?

Software companies realised the appeal and potential of online Baccarat during the 1990s to coincide with the rise of online gambling. Most online casinos consider Baccarat one of their most popular games, with many promoting offers to entice players with varying wagering limits to suit every player.

What is the objective of Baccarat?

Hand scores in Baccarat range from 0-9, with the main objective being to get as close to 9 as possible. Unlike Blackjack, it is impossible to go bust; therefore all scores are between 0 and 9. In Baccarat, there are two sides in a game – both sides need to try and get as near to a total of nine out of the dealt cards. Scoring is as follows: The Ace is worth one. Ten and the Royal cards are worth zero, and the rest of the cards are worth their face value. Players place their bets to see which side manages to reach nine with a two or three card hand.

What strategy is used?

As the player cannot influence the order of the cards, there is less room to manoeuvre with regards to employing a strategy due to Baccarat being a game of complete chance. However, a more indirect approach can be used. Some players keep records of the sequences of previous hands and place bets based on predictions of what the next outcome will be.
